According to a Riverside County Sheriff’s press release, deputies responded to a call regarding a woman screaming just after 1 p.m., Wednesday May 8 in the 600 block of Main Street.

“As officers arrived, the alleged suspect ran from the location and led officers on a brief foot pursuit through several backyards,” Sgt. Michael Canizales said.

During their search of a backyard in the 100 block of Brinton St., a pitbull attacked and bit one of the officers.

“The officers discharged their firearms to stop the pitbull’s attack,” Sgt. Canizales said.

The dog died at the scene.

Shawn Gaylord Sikes, 37, of Lake Mathews was eventually apprehended and arrested.

He was booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility for a felony burglary warrant.

Anyone with further details regarding this incident is urged to contact the San Jacinto Police Department at 951-654-2702.
